h a i r y j e d i . n e t - Tidal Wave Cancun Comes to a Close

Written by Sean and Sascha for Cancun Indymedia

The Cancun alternative media conference 'Tidal Wave' came to a close last night with a highly charged fiesta shared by several hundred locals and internationals. The fiesta was in one of Cancun's larger public parks, Parque La Palapas and large numbers from the local community came out to join in.

Cancun media activists hosted a week-long alternative media convergence in the week before the World Trade Organisation's meeting here. Media activists came from across the globe to attend the convergence and to protest the ultimately destructive trade policies put forth by the World Trade Organisation. The Convergence has now transformed like Voltron into IMC Cancun.

During the fiesta, Big Noise(http://www.bignoisefilms.com/) screened their
upcoming release World War Four (see trailer:
www.kein.org/~jacquie/4ww-trailer.rm) which showed highly emotive footage from protest actions from across the globe.

After the film, The Infernal Noise Brigade (http://www.infernalnoise.org/) got the crowds jumping with their massively political drum beats and performance.

"Nuestra Voz", a performance group from Comalapa, Chiapas used humour during their several short plays detailing the plight they are suffering under the lies of Mexican politicians' false promises and why they have chosen direct action over a dependency on party politics. Mexican politicians are forever going to Chiapas in order to win over voters but continually fail to deliver on those promises.

The more the activists here interact with the people of Cancun on the street and at events such as last night's fiesta, the more aware the population becomes of the protestors' good intentions here. People in Cancun are realising that it's the policies of the WTO that are inherently violent rather than the protestors.
